China's Rivers

Chang Jiang and Huang He are some of the most powerful rivers in China.

Huang He

Huang He stretches east across China for more than 2,900 miles. It is commonly known as the Yellow River. This river carries soil, also known as loess, and spreads large amounts of it downstream. The Huang He river has done good and bad stuff for the people of the Huang He valley. The river has benefited the people in that area by giving them soil to grow large amounts of food. The river has also brought great misfortune by often overflowing and causing enormous floods. This situation also brought the cause of the name "China's Sorrow" because it has killed millions of people.

Chang Jiang

The Chang Jiang, or the Yangzte River flows from west to east. It also flows through spectacular canyons and broad plains on its way to the East China Sea. This river is about 3,915 miles long, the Amazon in South America and the Nile in Africa are longer. Like the Huang He, the Chang Jiang provides rich soil for farming. The river was also important because it was a waterway for trade and transportation.
